Sick Day

I stayed up late last night working on the transition to the new design. It was nearly 4 a.m. when I stumbled off to bed. At that point, I felt tired, but otherwise fine.

We got up at 7 as usual, and I was immediately attacked by a stomach bug. I felt queasy and feverish, and I had several bad attacks of diarrhea. Tab took Daniel to school and then drove himself to work so that I wouldn't have to drive.

What was I saying just last week about not getting any time off when I am sick? I spent the morning wrapped up in an afghan on the couch, suffering from alternating bouts of chills and fever. Thank heavens for the Nickelodeon channel! I usually only let the boys watch one or two half hour kids' shows a day, but today I relaxed my rules and let them watch all morning. Between the TV and their Duplo building projects, Stephen and Matthew let me rest.

I vomited twice during the morning. Each time, I resisted it for as long as I could because there are very few things worse than throwing up. But eventually I had to give in. Fortunately, I hadn't eaten anything since the night before so there was very little in my stomach to throw up. I knew I should be drinking fluids, but I couldn't bring myself to do so until I knew I was past the worst of it.

Even after I stopped vomiting, I felt tired and weak all day. All I wanted to do was go to bed. Of course, today was the one day all month when Tab had a commitment after work that he couldn't break. Otherwise, I would have gone to sleep for the night at 6.

I called my mother and whined, "Where are you? I need some tea and toast!" My mom used to make us tea and buttered toast when we were sick, and it always tasted so good. "Just rest," she'd say in a comforting tone. Being sick is not nearly as much fun when you are a grownup and there is no mom around to take care of you.

Tab, God bless him, does his best, though. The dear boy made a special stop at the grocery store on the way home from his photo shoot tonight just to pick up some rainbow sherbet for me. It's the only thing I want to eat right now.

I'm feeling a lot better now than I did this morning. I hope this bug is on the run.
