Family Planning
This morning Tab had his first visit to the urologist to discuss having a vasectomy. We had only planned to have two children, but with the twins we got an unexpected bonus. Of course, we love all our children dearly and couldn't imagine life without any of them, but we are certain we don't want any more. And since we both seem to be astonishingly fertile (we conceived the twins while using the cervical cap), we've decided that we need to take significant action to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
Actually, we made the decision years ago; after giving birth to the twins via C-section and coping with a slow, painful recovery, I announced that I have already had more than my share of procedures and that it was time for Tab to step up to the plate. He agreed, but procrastinated on making the necessary medical arrangements until a recent scare inspired him to make the call.
Tab told me all about it as we were driving to his office after the appointment. The doctor examined him and said he is a good candidate for the surgery. It is a relatively simple, half-hour procedure, performed in the doctor's office under local anesthesia. Tab can even drive himself home afterward. Recovery is usually uneventful with perhaps some tenderness at the site.
"Hey, that's not bad. That's a walk in the park, compared to a tubal ligation." I commented. "Recovery for a tubal is something like six weeks with potential complications. Not to mention the pain of recovery. I know what that incision feels like!"
"Yeah, but then it would be you," Tab replied, dryly.
