Take a Pill
Poor Daniel was coughing so much last night that he had trouble falling asleep. I had given him some over-the-counter cough medicine before putting him to bed, but it didn't seem to be helping at all. Tab set up the humidifier, but Daniel kept coughing.
I went upstairs, bringing him a couple of the most recent library books I'd picked up. I arranged two pillows against his headboard and told him to try sitting up for awhile. He finished those books and came downstairs asking for more. He finally fell asleep around 10:30.
I called the pediatrician's office this morning but since Daniel doesn't have a sore throat or a fever, the nurse said he didn't need to come in. The doctor did prescribe a stronger cough medicine for him. When Tab picked it up at the drugstore this afternoon, we were surprised to see that it was in non-chewable pill form. Up till now Daniel has only taken medicine in chewable and liquid form
"Maybe we could chop it up and hide it in some meat," Tab joked. That is, of course, one of the ways we give medicine to the cats.
"Or one of us could put in his mouth and the other could stroke his throat to make him swallow it," I suggested.
Daniel amazed us both and swallowed the pill tonight at bedtime without complaint. So far it seems to be helping; he hasn't coughed all night.
