Questions for the Toothfairy

During dinner last night, Jake commented that Stephen and Matthew's differences are just like the differences between him and his twin brother, Al. "I have to try something to believe it, but Al has to believe something to try it."

That pretty much sums up Stephen and Matthew.

Daniel lost his top right front tooth last night, the fourth tooth he's lost in about a year. Based on the three secondary teeth that have grown in so far, we need to start saving money for orthodontia. Tab has very strong, healthy teeth--no cavities at all--but they are too crowded in his mouth. I have small, even teeth, which we hoped the boys would inherit, but it looks like Daniel, at least, will take after Tab.

Daniel woke up early this morning and was excited to discover a new Sacajewea dollar coin under his pillow in place of his tooth. This gift from the toothfairy sparked his curiosity about her. Unfortunately, I'm not well-versed in toothfairy lore.

"Is the toothfairy big like a grownup person, or is she small like Tinkerbell?"

"Uh...I don't know, honey. She couldn't be too small or she wouldn't be able to carry those coins around."

"What does she do with all the teeth?"

"Well, I've heard she's building a castle with them. It would take a lot of teeth to make a castle because, you know, teeth are pretty small."

"But where does she get the money to pay for them?"

Yikes. He's got me there. "Hmmm, I don't know, honey."

Exasperated sigh from Daniel. "Well, could you e-mail her and find out?"

Watching: Robot Wars, the British import on PBS. We taped last night's installment, a showdown between two finalists, Roadblock and Cassius. I like to think of Robot Wars as a kind of WWF for geeks, with robots and their nerdy creators instead of posturing, musclebound wrestlers.

Also watching: Jake and Daniel playing a game of chess. Jake is winning, but it has been a close match. Jake is impressed with Daniel's ability and thinks that Daniel will probably beat him when we visit in August.

One year ago: Our street is the American experience in microcosm; our own miniature, multi-cultural melting pot.
