Libary Books

This morning Daniel found a library book that I was beginning to think was lost forever. The book is due tomorrow and had been missing for nearly three weeks. Daniel found it under his bed. I should have looked there myself. I had looked through his bookshelves and through the pile of books on his headboard, but I had asked Stephen to look under the bed and he'd said it wasn't there.

Daniel brought the book with him in the car when we drove Tab to work. He offered to read it to Stephen and Matthew.

"One fine day," he began.

"One fine day, you'll look at me, and you will know our love is meant to be," sang Tab and I in unison.

"Mama! Daddy! Stop it!" the boys yelled. They don't like it when we burst into song unexpectedly. Given our lack of singing talent, it's no wonder.

After our reading lesson this morning, the twins and I went to the Mercer County library in Lawrenceville. Although we live in Mercer County, our town does not belong to the county library system. For several years I was able to use the library card of my mother's friend, Mary. Although she still owns a house in a nearby township, Mary was spending most of her time in Texas and had no use for her library card. Last year, however, the library personnel figured out that the card was not in fact mine, so I returned the card to Mary. I still had borrowing privileges at the university library by virtue of being married to an employee, but I missed not being able to borrow kids' books from the county library.

As a Christmas present this year, my mom and Mary gave us the $75 to purchase a non-resident library card, which has turned out to be a marvelous gift. The boys and I go to the library at least once a week and come home with armloads of books. Today we returned to the library two novels (me), eight easy readers (Daniel), eleven picture books (Stephen and Matthew), and three CDs. We came home with two non-fiction books for me, seven easy readers, ten picture books, two CDs, and two videos.

The twins enjoy picking out their picture books, with a little help from me. I especially love finding good "chapter books" for Daniel. He likes to read in the car and in bed before he goes to sleep. Seeing him absorbed in a book, oblivious to everything around him, thrills me to pieces.

Listening: Vivaldi, violin concertos, op. 12.

One year ago: I watch my sons in motion, and I marvel at how they inhabit their bodies.
