Catching Up

The past three days have passed so quickly. I have turned in two major projects to the Press this week, and I made both deadlines without staying up later than 2 a.m., I'm proud to say. I'm doing my best to avoid another all-nighter.

When I picked Daniel up at school on Monday afternoon, he was running a fever...yet again. He was coughing again, too. Of course, he sat out his Monday swimming lesson, and I kept him home from school on Tuesday, as well. He seemed better Tuesday afternoon and said he felt well enough to swim. Later that evening his temperature went back up to 103 degrees, so he stayed home yesterday, too.

Once again, I started worrying. Could this be yet another virus, or is there something else wrong with him? Over the past three weeks, Daniel has had three separate instances of fever, lasting several days each time. I tried not to let myself think too much about other potential health problems, but worrying runs in my blood, I'm afraid.

I made an appointment for Daniel at the doctor's for this morning. Of course, by this morning he seemed better again. And for once, the diagnosis was not just another virus, but an ear infection. At least an ear infection can be treated with an antibiotic. I hope this is the last illness poor Dans will have for some time.

Conversation in the Car

"I miss Nana," sighed Stephen. "Mama, when will Nana come to ur house?" The twins both mispronounce "our" as "ur."

"Our house, not ur house," snapped a sick, peevish Daniel from his seat in the back of the minivan.

"That's OK, Dans. It's kind of cute, the way they say it."

"Then I'm going to say it like that: ur house."

"Well, it's cute for a four-year-old, but not as cute for someone who's seven."

Watching: The West Wing (on Wednesday night). Wow! What an amazing season finale! It will be hard to wait another four months to see the resolution of this cliffhanger.

One year ago: I want all my sons to learn early that anything worth achieving requires their dedication and effort.
