Snow Lion

9:17 a.m. Tab has stopped at Staples to pick up Post-It notes for his office. The twins and I are sitting in the minivan, watching a flock of Canada geese milling about at the edge of the parking lot near a small stream. Canada geese are frequent visitors to this area. They seem to regard the Route 1 corporate parks as convenient spots for stop-overs on their migratory path, sort of geese motels. Some of the office complexes, with their landscaped grounds and man-made lakes and fountains, are so attractive to the geese that they have taken up year-round residence. This is the first time I have seen them at this strip mall, though. Curiously, there is a white domestic goose among these Canada geese. Is it traveling with them? I wonder. In this group of grey and black birds, the pure white goose looks strangely exotic.

We were a few minutes late this morning getting Daniel to school. He had forgotten the book he wanted to bring in, Snow Lion. He had brought this book in to kindergarten yesterday, and after nap time when the kids are encouraged to pursue quiet activities by themselves, he had picked it up and started to "read" it. Last night he lay on the couch and read it again. It is not an easy book; it's intended for parents to read to kids, not for beginning readers. But he managed to decipher most of the words on the first few pages. As a life-long lover of books, I am excited to see my oldest child on the threshold of reading. So I couldn't refuse Daniel when he begged to go back and get his book.

Random Rants: A headline in yesterday's paper caught my eye: "Despite Fears, Minnesota Thrives Under Ventura's Governorship." Come on! The man has only been in office a little over a week, right? He may turn out to be a wonderful governor for all I know, but isn't it a little early to tell?
