Drawing the Line

It was another beautiful day for our walks today. The sun was shining, the sky a beautiful shade of blue, and a light breeze was blowing. The temperature must have been close to 60 deg. The boys liked wearing their light-weight spring jackets instead of their winter parkas. Mr. Sherlock, one of our elderly neighbors, was out sitting on his porch. We haven't seen him since the weather started getting cold last fall.

I was up until 1:30 this morning finishing Peretti so I could turn it in today and get paid for it this week. Thank heavens for Nick at Night's old sitcoms, which kept me company after I lost interest in Conan. "The Mary Tyler Moore" show is followed by "The Dick Van Dyke" show. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Some time back, Tab's co-worker Janet, a single mom with a 6-year-old son, asked Tab whether he thought her son was ready to watch Star Wars. He told her Daniel first watched it when he was four and is a huge fan of all the SW movies. Yesterday, Janet told Tab that she and her son watched Star Wars over the weekend and he ended up sleeping in her bed that night because he was afraid of aliens. She couldn't believe that it never bothered Daniel. Tab explained that Daniel learned early on about the difference between fantasy in movies and reality. Tab is fascinated with special effects and other aspects of moviemaking, and he has talked alot with Daniel about Star Wars. Daniel always wants to know the way things work. He knows that the alien monsters are actually either puppets or actors in costume, and that the people he sees on screen aren't real but characters played by actors.

I guess everyone draws the line in a different place. I was horrified when I found out that one of my friends let her then six-year-old son watch The Terminator, a movie which I love but consider way too violent for young children. Janet is probably just as shocked at us for letting our kids watch Star Wars.
