4/17/1999 Saturday Watching: Deep Space Nine, which is dying a slow, painful death. For most of its run I have liked this Star Trek incarnation, but I'm not crazy about the mystical Prophets/Paghwraiths subplot, which is looming large as the series winds to a close. |
House of Contagion1:30 p.m. Somewhere in the wee hours of my recent all-nighter I realized I was coming down with a cold, and now it is in full force. My throat was very sore yesterday from a post-nasal drip, and today I've had a headache and have been sneezing and sniffling. Tab had this cold first; I suppose it was inevitable that I catch it, too, considering the crazy hours I've been keeping. My resistance is probably at an all-time low. My mother-in-law came over this morning to take the boys shoe shopping. Tab, Stephanie, and the twins went out on the first run so that I could continue working, and now Tab and Stephanie have taken Daniel out for shoes and lunch while the twins are napping. I insisted that this time the twins get sneakers with velcro fasteners; lately, they have been untying their shoes dozens of times over the course of the day, and I am tired of re-tying them. Before lunch, I took the twins for a walk so that they could show Miss Jean their new shoes. Matthew was in particularly good humor. "He is becoming so cute," Miss Jean commented. Matthew has an enchanting, elfin smile on his pointed little face, but he doesn't share it readily. Unlike his sociable twin, it takes Matthew a while to warm up to people. But once he feels comfortable with someone, he is as warm and affectionate as Stephen. 7:15 p.m. Stephanie and Tab took Daniel to his third swimming lesson this afternoon. For some reason, Daniel didn't want to get in the pool this time. It took the swimming instructors nearly ten minutes to coax him in, and even longer to get him to let go of the side rail. Eventually, he relaxed enough to perform his ten bobs and was thereby advanced up to the next level. The experience was a trying one for Stephanie, who wanted to hover pool side and offer advice to the teachers. Tab wouldn't let her, though, and kept bringing her back to the bleachers. This evening before dinner, Daniel threw up. Stephanie immediately blamed the swimming lesson, to Tab's great annoyance. He doesn't want her giving Daniel any reason to fear swimming. Personally, I think it might have had more to do with the two packages of Pez Stephanie gave Daniel after his lesson. 8:15 p.m. And the answer is...none of the above. Daniel threw up again, and now I'm starting to feel nauseated, too. I think we may be under attack by a virus. I have a feeling it's going to be a long night.
