5/6/1999 Thursday Reading: Gotham (well, the first chapter anyway, which is available as a preview on Amazon.com). I have a hold on it at the library; I can't wait until it comes in. |
Mustek LoveWell, I finally received the adapter cord for Lorraine's old Mustek scanner. Yeah! I spent a few happy hours playing around with it; the results can be seen here. One of these days, I have to dig through stacks of pictures to try to find a decent one of me and some more recent ones of the boys. They are cuties, though, aren't they? I decided to take Matthew to the pediatrician today. He is just a little off, and I was worried he had caught Daniel's strep throat. Today we saw Dr. Boim, the doctor I chose as the boys' primary care physician. I didn't know anything about her but picked her because she was one of the female docs in the practice. (I guess that is reverse sexism, but we've had better experiences with female pediatricians than male.) She turned out to be a good choice. She was very pleasant, down-to-earth, and not as rushed as the doctor who treated Daniel. I asked her if she had children, and she answered that she has a 2 1/2-year-old daughter and a 7-month-old son. I said, "I thought so. You seemed like a mom. And I mean that in a good way." She laughed. It turns out Matthew is strep-free but has an ear infection. So we have another antibiotic prescription to drop off at CVS. I had talked to Matthew beforehand about cooperating with the doctor. On previous doctor's visits, Matthew would sometimes turn his head away, making it difficult for the pediatrician to get a look at his ears, or he would refuse to open his mouth when requested. This time, however, he behaved wonderfully, doing everything the doctor asked. I praised him on the way to the car. "Matthew, you did great! I'm so proud of you." "Did I do great, Mama?" "Yes, you did. Thank you." For the rest of the day, Matthew told the pharmacist, Tab, Stephanie, Daniel, and total strangers, "I did great at the doctor's!" Daniel was very excited about going to his swimming lesson today. Yesterday he allowed Kevin to let go of him while he practiced floating. He was terribly proud of himself, and talked about his swimming lesson all day at school, according to Miss Dawn. At 4:20 we were standing by the side of the pool, waiting for Kevin, who was over with the level 3 kids, to come over to station 2. It slowly dawned on me that he wasn't coming. Another instructor introduced herself as Whitney and said she would be teaching Daniel today because Kevin had been switched to the level 3s. Poor Daniel, who has become very attached to Kevin, was devastated. He stood there on the verge of tears, refusing to get into the pool despite the best efforts of Whitney, a very friendly young woman. Ch'han, Daniel's former teacher who is now working with the level 1s, realized the problem, and came over to help coax Daniel into the pool. Eventually he got in, and soon he allowed Whitney to take over from Ch'han. In fact he was having so much fun at the end of the half hour, he didn't want to get out of the pool. He's come a long way from the boy who didn't even want to get his head wet in the bathtub.
