5/12/1999 Wednesday Weather: Rather warm and humid today. Reading: Spiderweb, by Penelope Lively. A novel about a retired anthropologist who has settled in a small town in the west of England after years of field studies in foreign locales. I like the way the novel moves back and forth in time, drawing parallels between the people she studied and the residents of this small town. |
Better Living Through PharmaceuticalsThe boys and I spent a lot of time running errands today. On the way back from UPS at about 9:30 this morning, I decided to drive by the AMC theater in Hamilton to see if anyone was in line for Phantom Menace tickets. Sure enough, there were already at least 25 people waiting, some with folding chairs. One guy was dressed in an Obi-Wan Kenobi costume. I never did try phoning for tickets today. Next Thursday I will be flying to Maine to visit my family for a few days--my annual mental-health getaway weekend. I realized that even if I were able to score tickets for opening day, fitting the movie into the day before my departure would be problematic. Sometimes I have to let the practical mom side of me triumph over the adolescent within. This movie theater is brand new and scheduled to open next Wednesday for Star Wars. It is supposed to have stadium seating (no heads in the way--yeah!), love seats, and state-of-the-art sound. I'm looking forward to seeing Episode 1 there with Tab and Daniel when I get back from Maine. My mother-in-law often rants about the evil times we live in and how much better things were when she was growing up. For her and for every one who waxes nostalgic about the good old days, I have one word: antibiotics. I, for one, am glad I live in a time when people don't regularly die from strep throat. And mine is much better, thanks to the wonders of Augmentin. Today I barely feel a twinge when I swallow. Now if I could only do something about these wretched allergies. I'm not sure what I'm allergic to, but every May and June I suffer from itchy eyes and sneezing. I'm trying to control it with allergy eyedrops and nose spray so I can avoid antihistamines. So far I'm having limited success.
