5/13/1999 Thursday Weather: It is damp and much cooler today than yesterday, less than 60 deg. Tomorrow is Daniel's class trip to the Philadelphia Zoo; I hope the weather is better. Reading: I finished Spiderweb. I was a little disappointed in the abrupt, ambiguous ending. |
Old FriendI had a doctor's appointment this morning for my twice-yearly thyroid recheck. Usually I get a referral form to take to the lab, but today my doctor took the blood sample herself to save me the extra trip, which was very thoughtful of her. She checked my throat and said it looks fine now. I'm still running a slight fever, and she said I have a slight ear infection. I remembered to ask her for a prescription for Claritin; I thought I'd give it a try. Tab swears by Claritin for his allergies. After the doctor's appointment I stopped by the Press to pick up one of my books which is back for second revises and then I went to On the Border where I met Liz for lunch. Liz is one of my closest friends. We met in Portland, Maine, fifteen years ago through Lisa, a mutual friend who thought Liz and I would have a lot in common. She was right. Liz and I both lost touch with Lisa long ago, but the two of us have remained close. I moved to New Jersey in 1987, and we kept in touch by mail while Liz lived in various places in New England. She got married a few years ago and moved here with her husband. We talked about our kids and working and the Mommy Track (she believes almost every professional woman who has a baby is automatically assigned to the Mommy Track) and the problems of home ownership. We reminisced about our small, spartan apartments in Portland. I told her that sometimes when the kids are driving me crazy and Tab and I are fighting, I fantasize about living alone in an apartment again, with lots of books and a few cats for company. Liz is one of the few people to whom I can say such a thing, who knows exactly what I mean.
