Watching: An episode of Nova called "The Unseen World" with the boys. Part of the program discussed how dead things are eaten by scavengers and broken down by microorganisms. It used time lapse photography to demonstrate the decomposition of a dead dove. The boys were fascinated.

In the Trap

Yesterday, Tab and Jake worked on a few necessary projects around the house. The first thing they did was replace the rug in the back hallway. Tab managed to get a good price on a carpet remnant in a pretty shade of light grey-blue, far nicer than the old carpet's hideous turkey red color. The back hallway now looks so much brighter with the new rug.

The other important task was removing the toilet to retrieve the infamous plastic cup that was flushed down the toilet back in March. Although at the time we hadn't known for sure which twin was responsible, we have since come to believe it was Matthew who had performed the nefarious deed. As Tab said, "Matthew just didn't deny it hard enough."

The toilet has not worked right since then. We could get it to flush, but only by holding down the flush handle long enough to produce a lot of water each time we used it.

Tab and Jake removed the toilet and used a closet auger (toilet snake) to fish the cup up from the trap. If the darn cup had been made of paper it would have long ago disintegrated; since it was plastic it was still completely intact.

Tab showed the cup to Matthew and Stephen. "Remember when you flushed this cup down the toilet, Matthew?" he asked.

"I saw him," confirmed Stephen.

"I don't want to talk about it!" shouted Matthew, covering his eyes with his forearm.

Mom and Jake left for Maine early this morning. Tab called their machine today and left a message for them to get upon their return: the sound of our toilet flushing.
