Tab Speaks!: If you've already read the entry for July 24, you may want to take another look at the sidebar for a post script from Tab.

Reading: I finished The Diamond Age. I thought the ending was a little abrupt, but maybe I felt that way because I hated to see the book end. Stephenson has a gift for synthesizing technology trends, history, religion, and philosophy to create a compelling story peopled by believable characters. I envy his ability.

I Want a New Drug

Chronic pain can be extremely challenging, even educational. Not unlike public television. Now it's time to see what's on cable.

--Miles Drentell, popping pain killers on thirtysomething

Macrobid bites. I've been taking this antibiotic since Thursday night, but so far it has not alleviated my urinary tract infection. If anything, I feel worse now than I did last week. I still have painful symptoms, and I'm still running a low-grade fever. My temperature is running between 99.6 and 100.5, and it's making me feel tired and run down all the time. I just want to sleep. Worse, the antibiotic seems to be giving me a horrendous case of gas. Yesterday I was having gas attacks so excruciating, I practically doubled over in pain. All in all, I had a miserable day yesterday, and a restless, sleepless night.

I have decided there is nothing ennobling or character-building about enduring pain. Pain steals away the simple enjoyment of life, and twists the personality. I found myself snapping at the boys for even the most minor transgressions. I couldn't even hold the twins on my lap when they clambered up on the couch and asked me to read to them.

"I'm sorry your tummy still hurts, Mama," Matthew said, kissing my stomach.

The boys can be so endearingly sweet, sometimes.

This morning I called my doctor's office for an appointment and a new prescription. I won't be able to see my doctor until tomorrow. In the meantime she did prescribe a new antibiotic for me, which I started taking today. I hope this one helps. My sister Lori will be in town for a few days, and I want to be able to spend some time with her.
